At some point when I was a kid, we had tamagatchis. You remember them – they were these things that you had to take care of and then if you did a good job, they died and went to heaven. Mine just died. Turns out, these things were a lot of work; you had to play with them, feed them, clean up after them when they pooped … alright, so I am writing this while the Minnow is laying in bed next to me, and the only real difference here is that he cries louder, and doesn’t have a battery that I can remove when I get bored. But the tamagotchi fad died out pretty quickly at my school (HB Thompson, go team name that I have long since forgotten). Turns out, the genre, and yes, it has reached genre status, never went away.
